End of Year Awards
Dear Casco Bay Families and Friends:
The Casco Credo for this year was "Rise Up to Be Your Best Selves,” and the 2022-2023 school year concluded with a bevy of students (and staff) doing just that, right until Mr. Burke and Ms McCray edged the student champs in Shibles' Crew in the final heat of the cardboard boat race. The 9th graders wowed us with their abstract portraits of prominent abolitionists and then deftly used an array of evidence to back up their perspectives on knotty bioethical issues in the culminating Question of Conscience dialogues. The sophomores shared who they are and who they hope to be during sophomore passages, and the juniors educated the sophomores about the chemistry of climate change with both visuals and data analysis. The Class of 2023 appropriately led the way with a splendid curtain call, including Prom, Senior Awards, Graduation and, of course, Final Words.
In my view, Final Words is our best, and perhaps most important ritual. It provides a sacred glimpse into the soul of each senior as they are on the verge of a momentous transition. It makes transparent our belief that each CBHS student is important and capable of greatness. And for us educators, it’s also the greatest possible exit interview, helping us understand what matters to our students and what they are learning most deeply. The seniors’ final words may be the best reflection of who we are as a school. And so, as is tradition, what follows are excerpts from the Class of 2023’s gorgeous, powerful and revelatory Final Words.
"In an attempt to buoy our spirits we stood in a circle with our arms linked together on the beach. We took a collective deep breath as the rain continued to come down. Despite the fact that I was shivering, and tired…, I was happy to be standing there, basking in the warmth that only a Casco circle could generate.” ~ Delainey Black
"I want to be the view when the sun is setting behind the expansive sea. Do I want be just fine?
No…. I want be my incredible.” ~ Amin Mohamed
"I've learned that connecting with people and finding a sense of home is about something other than fitting in. It's about embracing your uniqueness, standing up for your choices, and engaging actively in shared experiences.”
~ Phat Minh La
"I work around what is wrong and make it something new and right that no one had thought of or even tried.”
~ Mohamed Mohamed
"Freedom, that’s a word that not a whole lot of people would associate with their high school experience. But, of course, it has been the defining aspect of my time here. I’ve been free to pop the proverbial bubble that normally surrounds a high school and, alongside some of the oddest people I’ve ever met, make an actual difference in the world.” ~ Walter Niehoff
"I realized I still thought that my life was a joke. But jokes aren’t all that bad… {I] always thought that the people around me had it all going well and planned for them while I’m stuck in a winding road with terrible drivers and slippery roads. But I couldn't be more wrong… Casco Bay taught me to accept and confront the things in my life that hold me back.” ~ Jobe Odulio
"Casco, thank you for showing me how to mess up. Thank you for teaching me how to ask for help. Thank you for being my safety net when I fall. Thank you for showing me that my hair is beautiful in all of its frizziness. And thank you for readying me to go off into this world, curls flowing.” ~ Aria Pines
"I have learned how to be myself.” ~ Medley Okorie
"I know now that life will always find a way to beat you to the ground and it will keep kicking you if you stay down. But you must never stay down. You get back up and fight back with double the force.” ~ Jacob Shunk
"... I can say for certain that I will never go back into the shadows. It takes time and energy to regain the things you lose while hiding… Everything you see standing before you today is truly me, without filtering anything out. And in a few months I will leave for Boston as I am, no more hiding.” ~ Finn Brydon
"For now I'm still a quiet kid, but no longer a silent kid.” ~ Kalid Mohammed
"I told myself that if I'm going to walk the stage, I have to work harder than Lebron in the 2016 finals.” ~ Ayub Sheikh
"...I only want the best: the best version of myself, the best grades, and the best type of love there is possible out in this world. Now as a young adult I love gold, but it’s not just any gold. My mother and I like to laugh at what we call ‘American gold’ because the gold jewelry here is distinctly different from the gold bought from the Middle East or Africa. The gold from the motherland is pure; although expensive, it's worth every penny because we deserve it. I deserve it.” ~ Margret Valerio
"Despite the endless obligations of life, I have the freedom and the will to live a life I will be proud of.” ~ Caden Paulus
"Casco Bay High School has taught me the joy of brain explosions… The kind of explosion that feels like an itch in your brain that you can only scratch by smiling, laughing, or whooping as loud as you can. The kind of explosion that you can only get by learning something totally unexpected, or climbing to the top of a mountain, or letting your mind wander until you stumble over a thought so absurd that you can’t help but laugh.” ~ Jasper Ellis
"My gender cannot define who I am and who I can be…I am proud to be a female. I am proud to be Marwa.” ~ Marwa Aslami
"I was the last one in my room to present. I started to speak with all eyes on me…. By the end, I felt so proud of myself for being able to do something younger Jackie would have never imagined doing….
When my parents arrived in this country 23 years ago, they had no idea what their lives would become…. They have both sacrificed so much for me to have the life they never had. I know if my mother and father had had the opportunity to go to school when they were younger, they would have taken it… This is just a glimpse of what motivates me as a first-generation… college student, the motivation to do better than life allowed my parents.” ~ Jackie Rodas
"I see the person I’ve become. I see myself, and I smile.” ~ Miles Fischer

Thank you, Class of 2023! May you continue to learn and progress and thrive, and may you continue to share your voice and wisdom and love with the world.

Staffing Updates
Departing Staff
In addition saying goodbye to the Class of 2023, we have bid a fond farewell to the following staff members who will beginning new adventures this summer and fall.
Maxim Bachvaroff (9th grade student support) did transformative work with a 9th grade student this year. Mr. Bachvaroff will be exploring a career in school adjacent professions.
Katie Flavin’s joy, creativity and positivity will be deeply missed. She’s filled in for two teachers during their maternity leaves the last two years, first for Ms. Crowley and then this year for Ms. Kutvirt (11th grade chemistry). She will be teaching environmental science at Deering next fall.
Liz Koharian (10th grade wellness) is one of few PPS staff to have worked in all three high schools. Ms. Koharian got married a few days after the school year ended and will soon be launching a new career in the public health field at Central Maine Medical Center. Congrats!
Stacey Woidt (10th grade physics) has been a stalwart for Team 10 since 2015 - not to mention a spectacular baker. Ms. Woidt has taken a job teaching engineering in Scarborough, the district where she lives and her children will be attending.
David Burke (math) is retiring after being a founding faculty member of both Casco Bay High School and Poland Regional High School. (He’s also legendary at Kennebunk High School.) Mr. Burke is the faculty member who was the inspiration behind both Junior Journey and the Cardboard Boat Race. Mr. Burke hopes to spend even more time playing ukulele and telling stories that are too long, but often hilarious and brilliant.
We are so grateful for how each of these staff members have bettered our community.
Staff Leave Updates
Ms. Kutvirt will be returning from her maternity leave and once again teaching chemistry on Team 11. Unfortunately for CBHS, Ms Manyiel has opted not to return from her leave. Ms. Manyiel is currently working for Portland Empowered after a stint of teaching English in Egypt.
Mr. Leque will be on leave for most of the next school year. He relates, "I have been recalled to active duty for one year at the Naval Warfare Development Center in Norfolk, Virginia to lead the development of a global exercise series that will give me an opportunity to end my 30-year Navy career on a strong note.”
Ms. Taraschi will be on maternity leave for most of the first half of the 23-24 school year.
New Roles
After a long and distinguished stint as our Director of Student Life, Mr. Shibles will be returning next fall to his first job at Casco Bay High School - sophomore wellness teacher. He will continue with his crew as they rise to junior year.
Ms. Appelbaum has officially retired, but she will be returning to work half-time as an English teacher and literacy coach. She will continue to oversee our library, coach teachers and lead our 9th and 10th grade Exceeds Reading classes.
Social Worker Chloe Dolce will be at Casco Bay full-time next year. Half of her time will be dedicated to supporting students in our new Breathe Support program for a group of our students with IEPs.
Casco students will be very pleased to know that Jack Meahl will be back next fall but in a new role as an 11th and 12th grade math teacher. Mr. Meahl will be teaching Junior/Senior Algebra, Pre-Calculus and Statistics as well as leading a senior crew. For the past year, Mr Meahl was our daily "dedicated substitute teacher," including long-term stretches for both Mr. Burke and Ms. Lacasia. Mr Meahl's previous work experience includes time at UNUM in customer service as well as organic farming in New Zealand. Mr. Meahl earned his BA in Economics from Tufts.
New and Newly Returning Staff
Finally, we are thrilled to welcome our new and newly returning faculty members.
Priya Natarajan will be our first ever Assistant Principal (replacing the Director of Student Life position). Before becoming our (terrific) Interim Dean of Students, Ms. Natarajan was the PPS High School Instructional Math Coach. As many of you know, from 2014-2021, Ms. Natarajan was a math teacher and teacher leader at CBHS; she won the Presidential Award for Teaching Excellence in Math in 2017. Prior to working at CBHS, she was a math department chair and teacher at both Deering HS (2002-2014) and Boston Arts Academy (1998-2002). Ms. Natarajan earned a BA from Ohio University and an education Master's from Harvard. At USM, she earned her ESOL certification and the Leadership for Tomorrow's Schools program. She has previously taught the district's Race in America course as well as several USM math courses.
Alberto Morales will be returning to CBHS next fall as our inaugural Dean of Students. As many may recall, Mr. Morales was an English teacher (and CBHS parent) for many years at Casco Bay before serving as Assistant Principal at Portland High this past year. Alberto was a founder and inspiration for our Community Council and one of the authors of the district's "Educators of Color Insight Report." He also was one of the originators of the district's Race in America course. Mr. Morales began his teaching career in Cambridge before moving to Maine and teaching Spanish at Deering. He earned his BA at Boston College and completed his educational leadership work at USM.
Gwyneth Nicholson (.7) will be joining our English faculty next year, teaching AP English, Creative Writing and I Am From Many Worlds - as well as leading a junior crew. Gwyneth taught theater in Kennebunk for 7 years before moving to Saco Middle School as an English and Humanities teacher in 2008. In Saco, she co-created a project-based learning team while serving in numerous leadership roles, from directing plays. co-founding the Gay-Straight Alliance and being a part of the leadership team as well as the anti-racism and cultural proficiency committee. Gwyneth earned a BA in theater from the U. of Maine, completed her teacher certification at UNE and most recently finished an MA in Literacy, also at the University of Maine. Welcome Gwyneth!
Please welcome (back) Matt Hosmer who will be joining our math faculty! Mr. Hosmer was a beloved intern with Mr. Leque in 2017-2018. Since then he had a stint teaching pre-calculus at Scarborough and he's been an 8th grade math teacher at Noble Middle School for the last three years (where he's also been a leader in DEI work as well as the cross-country and track coach). Matt earned his BA in math at USM where he later completed the ETEP program. Mr. Hosmer will be teaching math to all sophomores and leading a sophomore crew.
George Aponte Clarke will be returning as our physics teacher next fall. Mr. Aponte Clarke was our physics teacher for a year and a half during the pandemic while Ms. Woidt was on leave and has been teaching environmental science and earth science at Deering High School for the last 2 years. Some of you may recall that George is the parent of two fabulous CBHS alums (Sierra and Morgan) as well as the long-time coach of the PPS Nordic ski team. Prior to teaching, George had a distinguished career in water policy and resource management, serving for many years as the Deputy Director of the Penobscot River Restoration Trust. He earned a BA in Environmental Studies from St. Lawrence and an MS in Environmental Science from the University of Michigan.
Jen Lindsay will be joining Casco Bay to run our new Breathe Support program for a small cohort of our students with special needs. Ms. Lindsay started at King as an ed tech and was a classroom teacher there for 20 years. She recently transitioned to the elementary Breathe program at Rowe. She is currently working in the Learning Works summer program as both a teacher and site coordinator. She lives in Scarborough with two teenage daughters and two dogs. Ms. Lindsay earned her BA from USM.
Harley Nimblett will be our long-term art substitute when Ms. Taraschi goes on maternity leave. Ms. Nimblett graduated and completed her BFA and student teaching through USM. Her teaching jobs include work at Freeport MS and Yarmouth HS. In addition to making art and teaching art, Ms. Nimblett has been studying Korean since 2019. Ms. Nimblett is excited to be a part of Team 9.

Geometry Summer Start Up (July 31- Aug 4) (.5 Math UPs)12:00-3:00pm at CBHS
Does Geometry really matter? Will I ever use it again? The answer is….of course! In this course we will focus on integrating the concepts of geometry into our daily lives and surroundings. The word "geometry" comes from the Greek words "geo" meaning "earth" and "metron" meaning "measure." Therefore, geometry is the measurement of the earth…. We will have fun exploring our environment and learning about our geography through the lens of geometry!
All 5 days of attendance is mandatory/No partial credit for missed or late days. Be on time!
No transportation provided - It's a great time to try out the METRO before school starts!
To sign up or learn more, please email Ms. Hampton at hampte@portlandschools.org or complete the form at the QR code below:
Also - please don't forget about our Summer Bridge Program August 23 and 24 from 9am-2pm!
We are hoping for ALL of our rising 9th graders to attend this CBHS orientation event to meet classmates and learn more about what it means to be a Casco Bay High School 9th grader and how to have a successful 9th grade year.
2023 TNTP Survey Results
Each spring, all PPS teachers take The New Teacher’s Project (TNTP) "Instructional Culture Insight Survey." Our Leadership Team reviews the survey results - as well as a raft of data from students and parents - when we formulate our priorities and action plan for the following year. Below are some headlines from this year’s results.
Instructional Index
According to TNTP’s research, the 3 survey questions that comprise the “instructional index” most correlate with a strong instructional culture “which matters for improving student outcomes and retaining effective teachers.” We had the highest instructional index of any school in Portland. We have scored first or second on this index each of the last 4 years. And our Index score this year was as high as it has ever been.
Percent of CBHS Teachers Who Agree/Strongly Agree:
-
The expectations for effective teaching are clearly defined at my school - 91%
-
Teachers at my school share a common vision for what effective teaching looks like in practices - 91%
-
My school is committed to improving my instructional practice - 87%
Other Big Picture Trends
-
We scored higher than the national average in 9 of the 12 domains. The national average is based on data from 2019-2022 (so is likely a bit inflated compared to 2023 averages).
-
We scored in the top quartile of schools in 3 of the 12 domains (Evaluation, Peer Culture and Leadership).
-
We scored in the top quartile of all PPS schools in 9 of the 12 domains. We scored higher than the PPS average in all 12 domains.
-
Compared to our spring 2022 results, our scores increased in 9 of the 12 domains and went down in 3 domains (DEI, Learning Environment and School Operations).
Some Encouraging Growth - from 2022 to 2023
