O’Toole Award Updates: Thanks
to you and the loyal supporters you’ve enlisted, we are still ahead in
the voting. It’s clear CBHS supporters are the most passionate! BUT the
voting continues for another 2 weeks (till 9/30). And we are competing
with cities 3 times as big (Providence) and 10 times as big (Boston) –
and with states that have populations that are nearly 3 times as large
(CT) or over 5 times as large (MA). So we are still
the underdogs. Build Community. Work Ethically. Persevere. (And Have
Fun). If you want to join the team that is leading efforts to get out
the vote, come to a meeting in the Great Space at 4pm on Wednesday.

CRAFT FAIR VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
CBHS’s annual Craft Fair is Saturday November 22nd, and in order to
make this a great event we need volunteers, lots of them! It’s a great
community event as well as a fantastic fundraiser that supports the CBHS
programs we love. First meeting is Tuesday, September 23rd at 7:00 in the Great Space. We need you, please join us! If you can’t attend but would like to support this fun event, please email Kim Crabill at CBHSCraftFair@gmail.com or phone her at 615-3181.
Hosts Needed for Visiting Russian Students – from Ms. Martin (Science Faculty)
At the end of October, six students from Archangelsk, Russia–our sister city–will be in Portland for about a
week with two female
teachers. They all need host families–a place to sleep and someone to
feed them and an occasional ride to the Mall and other places in
Portland. Preferably, host families will have a CBHS student. They will
be a mix of boys and girls. They all speak English and chose to come in
October because they want to experience Halloween!
There will be
activities planned for the students and teachers that will sometimes
take them away at mealtimes, and they will probably be in Boston for at
least one full day.
Please ask your
students if they would be interested in hosting one of the students, and
let me know if you’d be willing to host a teacher! If anyone would like
more info they may see me, or Liam Fowler, who has hosted an
Archangelsk student two different years. He speaks of his experience
with great enthusiasm

Hannaford Pre-paid Card Program: Fundraiser for Project Graduation 2015
This is a great
fundraiser for Project Graduation. The seniors are busy thinking about
“senior” things like… graduating and college applications! When the
Class of 2015 does graduate, we will throw them a big, fun, safe, chem-free party–known as Project Graduation.
Parents of graduates will be called upon to help with many facets of this event, but…
ALL PARENTS can help with this great fundraiser.
Why is this is a great fundraiser?
When you purchase a pre-paid Hannaford card (a.k.a. “gift card”), you get a card for the value you paid.
The
“gift” comes from Hannaford, in that they will donate 5% ($50 for every
$1000 in cards we purchase) to our event. Simple, right?
We
will be trying to do an order every month. There are group minimums, so
if the minimum is not met, we may wind up having to go 5 or 6 weeks.
But, I am aiming for once a month. If you are able to pre-pay for your
groceries, this is the way to do it!

Select Student Announcements
We
have a new “co-curricular board” in the Great Space to post meeting
times of both standing meetings (eg: GSTA) and one time events (eg: a
college visit). Please post your events today! See Mr. Pierce if you would like to oversee the board’s upkeep.
We
are making progress on getting iPads ready for distribution; team 9 may
have to wait post Quest unfortunately. The first batch of 10-12 grade
ipads we hope to distribute during Wednesday crew. School Meeting will
follow lunch on Wednesday this week – and then crew and BK6. No iPAD’s
will be issued to students who have not returned the iPAD protection
forms and appropriate fees ($25) – nor to those who have not paid any debts from last year.
Students experiencing financial hardship may pay $10 for the protection
plan. Students with further extenuating circumstances should see Mr.
Pierce.
Cabinet Elections and Proposal
Naomi Rowe-Radtke will be the new 9th grade rep to Cabinet and Sumi Awale is the new “at large” Cabinet rep . Eliza D’Anieri is the alternate. Congrats! Their names were both chosen by lottery. We will have an election for the 11th
crew rep position. The vote will take place during Wednesday crew; the
candidates are Jim, Declan and Lona. The environmental club submitted
the following proposal. Please submit your crew’s feedback on ideas via
the google form by the end of crew on Friday, 9/19.
Proposal: Each
crew would be responsible for monitoring lunch recycling once a week.
Specifics of “monitoring” TBD. The crew would be assigned lunch duty the
week prior to their facilitating school meeting.
