2020 Academic Options and Summer Reading at Casco Bay High School
To
be on track for graduation, students need to earn at least ten
credits a year. Eight credits in English are required for graduation
– as well as six in math, science and social studies. We strongly
encourage students to do whatever it takes to stay on the path
towards graduation.
CBHS
3rd
Trimester Sun School – for 9th and 10th graders (only) who earn a 2+ in the 3rd
trimester in math, science, English or social studies (or by teacher
permission).

$25 per course and $5 for
students who receive free lunch. Free for students who earned a HOW
of 3 or better in the trimester for that course
PPS Summer School
Portland Public Schools will again be offering
summer school courses in English, math, social studies and science.
Students may sign up for ONE course (and possibly two) through PPS
Summer School,
this year hosted by Deering High School. The class will run weekdays in July,
8am to 12:10, July 8th-26th. The
cost for one course is $100; two courses cost $150.

Field Mapping Portland’s Geology: GEO 199
A CBHS - USM Summer Science Intensive
July 29th to August 2nd - 8am-3pm
A one week (M-F) all day (8:00 - 3:00) course in which students will be introduced to the basics of geology, learn the geological history of the Greater Portland Area, and embark upon a field mapping expedition to important geological sites in the city, all accessible by public transport. The course will be taught jointly by USM and CBHS faculty and carries one college credit and .67 CBHS UPs in science.
Topics covered:
1. Portland's Bedrock Geology -- Volcanoes and Earthquakes
2. Portland's Surficial Geology -- Ice and Water
3. Traditional Mapping -- Compasses and Topo Sheets
4. Modern Mapping -- Story Maps Online
Cost $100. The payment can be in person with cash or check at USM Student Financial Services in Portland, or online through the students’ MaineStreet account (that s/he will create after registering for the course). We do not mail paper bills for the summer charges accrued!

2020 Summer
Math Workshop at CBHS
Students in grades 9-11 will have the opportunity to earn up to one trimester of math credit over the summer through supported and customized sessions on ALEKS. This opportunity is available for any CBHS math student, regardless of whether you are interested in credit remediation, acceleration or just deepening your math skills with more practice. Students will complete 10 three-hour sessions with CBHS math faculty support during Tuesdays and Thursdays in July and August. Precise meeting dates and times as well as an application are here. below. Participants must be able to attend 10 sessions to be eligible for credit; a designated number of topics must also be mastered.
The cost will be $50 ($10 for free or reduced lunch students). The first 25 students who return the application with the necessary payment will have a spot in the class.
