Spring trimester Progress Reports for students grades 9-11 will be viewable online by day’s end Wednesday.

Juniors will be attending a college fair on Wednesday morning; sophomores will be attending the play Disgraced at Portland Stage on Thursday.

Please join the seniors as they culminate their study of rhetoric and the First Amendment with a “Soapbox Celebration of Free Speech” from 5:30 to 7:00 in Monument Square this Friday, May 12. The seniors invite the CBHS community to attend, listen, and take their own turn on a soapbox. What do you want to tell the world?

Our semi-annual showcase and celebration of student work. Come one, come all. Dessert potluck.

Help Wanted
Plant sale coming right up!  The CBHS Plant Sale will be this Saturday May 13, the day before Mother's Day.  We need all the lovely plants you can spare from your gardens. If you need help digging up and dividing, please let me know and I'll help you do that.  We will need old plant pots of all sizes, seedlings, and help on that Saturday 8am-1pm to sell the gorgeous greenery. Dance tickets for both prom and this week’s International Dance are on sale during lunch and acad. The names of any guests for this Friday’s dance must be submitted by day’s end Thursday. Promposals can be festive, but remember the planning, doing and posting of Promposals should happen outside of academic time, including crew.
Join the CBHS Outing Club for Teens to Trails 4th Annual Spring Thing Weekend  
Saturday-Sunday May 20th-21st on the Kennebec River!!
Explore The Forks and Caratunk area. Saturday will include outdoor activities such as hiking, trail work, canoeing, and outdoor living skills with an evening screening of the Maine Outdoor Film Festival and the joys of overnight camping.  Sunday will be a guided whitewater rafting trip on The Forks. Cost is a steal at $35/person! You need to sign up and pay by this Wed, May 10th with Ms Crowley.

Sophomores and Juniors
1) the deadline to sign up for fall college classes at USM or SMCC is Friday May 26th. See Ms. Doyle or Mr. Hale FMI.
2) Registration for AP4ALL online courses will open on May 15, 2017. Most every AP course is available. See Mr. Hale or Ms. Doyle FMI.

Revised Format for Crew Variety Show - THIS Friday:
1:33-1:45 – Crews gather in their own crew space for final preparations and run-through.
1:50 – Grade Levels begin Grade Level Finals
Grade 9 – Great Space
Grade 10 - China
Grade 11 - Russia
Grade 12 - Library

2017 Guidelines for Acts:
-Include every crew member
-Be wildly entertaining
- Be school appropriate (PG-13)
- Be 4 minutes or less

Decision-Making
The winner of each grade level will be determined by a vote from each crew leader plus one outside judge. Crew leaders will be tasked with voting for the best act that is NOT their crew. Outside judges choose what they perceive to be the best act. The act with the most votes advances to the finals. In the event of a tie, the outside judge’s vote is the decider.
The finals will take place during School Meeting the following Wednesday on 5/17.

Tuesday- 11:30 – University of King’s College
Lunch/Acad – Thanks to the organizations providing our bystander and target training: Portland Defending Childhood, GLSEN, Prevention Action Change and Family Crisis/YAAPP. Seniors will be having Part 2 (of 2) of this training in China, Russia and the library during lunch and Acad. (They will have lunch during normal crew time.)

Mother's Day is this coming Sunday. The Casco Bay Makers Block is hosting an art and crafts sale during academic support this Thursday on the second floor. This is a great opportunity to purchase high quality, one of a kind gifts at reasonable prices. Many gifts priced at $5.00 or less. Get custom Portland Neighborhood Necklaces (Peak's Island, Deering, Back Cove, etc), Beach stone necklaces, raw silk bracelets, and one of kind glass bead earrings.

Student crafters who will be selling products at the sale should be excused from Block 3 at 12:30 to set up their tables. Students can store their products in Ms Laughlin's room on the day of the sale. If you would like a table at this event contact Ms. Laughlin by Tuesday.

PATHS graduation is May 19th. CBHS students that drive to seek are asked to seek an alternative way to school that day so that there is adequate parking for families celebrating graduates.
PPS Student-Athlete Meeting on June 1, 2017. - 6pm. This is for EVERY student-athlete and family that may participate in ANY sports next year (be it Deering OR Portland). If a student will be a Ram - they come to the meeting at Deering HS. If a student will be participating as a Bulldog - they come to the meeting at Portland HS

Summer Opportunities:
Free SAT Prep Course this summer through Let’s Get Ready at Deering, starting 6/15. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30-8:30. See Ms. Doyle to sign up or go to letsgetready.org.

Sophomores and juniors: See Mr. Hale or Ms. Doyle to apply for the Gateway to Opportunity summer program. Get job skills, job training and get paid $10.68 an hour. To be eligible, you must receive free or reduced lunch or any other type of public assistance.  The program will run from Monday, June 26th – Thursday, August 3rd from 10:00 – 3:30 Monday – Thursday.  Students need to be available for the duration of the program.

MPR has partnered with the Maine Writing Project to sponsor the Raise-Your Voice Workshops, two-week writing camps running form July 24th to August 4th.  The free workshops are designed to help young people craft their ideas about issues they care about  and then develop writing and multimedia that will be showcased on Raise Your Voice.
